Mikel Arteta will be in the technical area at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday as Arsenal face Hull City, but the Evening Standard reports that one more booking would bring a one-match touchline ban. The Arsenal manager is on two yellow cards in the Premier League this season, and a third on Saturday would rule him out of the dugout for the trip to Newcastle on 21 November.
How Arteta reached two bookings
During Arsenal's 2-0 victory over Everton last month, referee Tony Harrington cautioned Arteta in the second half, seemingly because he had left his technical area at the Emirates Stadium. According to the Standard, that was his second booking in nine Premier League matches.
The first came at Sunderland in September, again for leaving the technical area, as Arteta reacted angrily to refereeing decisions despite Arsenal winning at the Stadium of Light. He avoided a further card in the recent win over Liverpool, but remains one away from a suspension.
What a third card would mean
For managers, three yellow cards bring a guaranteed one-match ban. According to The Standard, the threshold for accumulating three bookings remains in effect through the 32nd Premier League match of the season, meaning the danger continues well past this weekend.
Saturday's fixture is Arsenal's final match before the November international break, with the Newcastle away game to follow on 21 November.
Arteta's response
Speaking after the Everton match, Arteta accepted that he needs to be more careful. "I do have to be careful," he said. "I'm going to put sensors there. In the league, some managers hold a record of leaving the touchline 36 times in 10 minutes without receiving any yellow cards.
He added that he has been gathering examples of similar behaviour from other managers, saying: "I'm not the record yet, somebody else has the record."
Dowman's ban continues
Arsenal will also be without Max Dowman against Hull. The club lost its appeal against the 16-year-old's red card in the Carabao Cup fourth-round tie with Fleetwood, which the Standard says came after he reacted to a forceful tackle from Harrison Neal in the closing stages of the match.
The resulting three-match suspension began with last weekend's visit to Anfield and covers Saturday's meeting with Hull.
