Arsenal's 1-0 win at Liverpool on Sunday has been called "huge" for the Premier League title race by Steven Gerrard, while Declan Rice has named Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City as the teams he expects to push the Gunners this season. According to the Mirror, Kai Havertz found the net during the first half at Anfield, lifting Mikel Arteta's team three points above Manchester City at the summit, while Liverpool stayed fifth following the loss.
Gerrard: 'That's how you win leagues'
Speaking on The Overlap on Monday's, the former Liverpool midfielder said the result could prove a defining one. "Could be huge for Arsenal," Gerrard said, arguing that the nature of the performance mattered as much as the scoreline. "That's how you win leagues," he added, praising Arsenal for sticking together and producing "a different type of performance" at Anfield.
Gerrard said he expected Arsenal to look back on the trip to Merseyside with more fondness than their more comfortable wins, and that he had not altered his view since the start of the season about where the trophy would go. He also felt Liverpool had made life harder for themselves by conceding early, and pointed to the Alexis Mac Allister chance and a penalty incident, with Alisson making a save, as moments that could have changed the game.
Metro reports that Gerrard, although he still backs Arsenal to keep the title they claimed last season—when Arteta brought the club's 22-year wait to an end—thinks City, Liverpool and Chelsea will "pull away" from the other teams and challenge them. He said Liverpool, who sit fifth, have "work to do" if they are to stay in the fight.
Gerrard was also asked about Brighton, who won 1-0 at Manchester City at the weekend and sit third. He said he would "put my neck on the line" by predicting they fall away from the title picture, while describing Fabian Hurzeler's side as top-four contenders and "the most dangerous team in the league at the moment to play".
Rice names his rivals
Rice, speaking after the final whistle at Anfield, listed Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City as the sides in the race. Football.London points out that Brighton went unmentioned, even though the Seagulls are the sole side to have defeated Arsenal in the league this season.
"I've learned in this league November means nothing," Rice said, adding that a team simply has to win as much as possible before the picture becomes clearer in February and March. He was generous about Liverpool's form under Andoni Iraola, saying their "attack is incredible, and the defence is really good", and also credited City's start and Chelsea's presence in the chasing pack.
The midfielder attributed Arsenal's resilience to the manager's work. "It's just drilled into us what this manager has built at this club and the togetherness of the lads," he said, describing the way everything is controlled at the club as unlike anything he has seen. He said the win at Anfield required Arsenal to dig in and be strong because Liverpool "throw so many attacks at you".
BBC Sport, the outlet where Rice gave his match analysis, observed that Arsenal had secured their first Premier League win at Liverpool in 14 years.
Quick turnaround
Arsenal are back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to Slavia Prague in the Champions League, before facing Hull City at the weekend in their final fixture before the November international break, according to the Mirror. Liverpool go away to Crystal Palace, while City face Nottingham Forest.
The Mirror adds that Arsenal lost to Brighton before the September international break but have since responded with four consecutive Premier League wins.
