Arsenal secured a 2‑0 triumph over Everton at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, moving level on points with Manchester City after eight league games. The win, described by former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson as “comfortable”, was highlighted by an early goal from defender Ezri Konsa and a second strike from centre‑back Gabriel Magalhaes. While the result was welcomed, the match also produced a handful of injury concerns that could shape the squad’s options for the coming Carabao Cup clash with Fleetwood Town and the crucial Premier League encounter with Liverpool.
The Gunners opened the scoring within the first ten minutes when a corner was flicked on by the home side and Konsa tapped the ball home from close range. The goal marked his first for Arsenal since joining from Aston Villa earlier in the summer. Everton struggled to create clear-cut chances, and their attempts, including a notable effort from Thierno Barry, failed to find the net.
In the second half, Arsenal doubled their lead when Gabriel Magalhaes rose to meet a Ben White cross, heading the ball into the back of the net in the 68th minute. The Brazilian’s goal came on his 200th Premier League appearance and capped a day that saw both of Arsenal’s centre‑backs on the scoresheet – a rarity not seen since early 2024.
Merson, speaking on Sky Sports, praised the overall performance, noting that while Everton “played some nice football” after the early goal, Arsenal “were comfortable winners”.
Beyond the defensive solidity, the midfield battle drew particular attention. Paul Merson singled out captain Martin Odegaard for special commendation, calling him “outstanding” and the player who “ticks it all over”. Merson highlighted Odegaard’s comfort on the ball, his left‑foot proficiency, and his influence on the team’s rhythm, especially when fully fit.
The former England midfielder also mentioned the contributions of Bruno Guimarães, who provided “lovely little balls” when called upon, underscoring the depth of Arsenal’s midfield options. However, Merson expressed concern over the recent hamstring issue that forced Bukayo Saka off in the Champions League tie against Bayern Munich, suggesting the winger could be sidelined for up to eight weeks.
While the result was positive, the match ended with two notable injury incidents.
Riccardo Calafiori – The Italian left‑back was introduced in the latter stages of the game, replacing Myles Lewis‑Skelly. He left the pitch at full‑time after appearing to struggle with a “slight issue”, described by Mikel Arteta as “something very small”. Arteta clarified that the problem was not muscular and that Calafiori had taken a heavy collision to the ribs earlier in the half. He added that the player was “cautious” about the matter and that the coaching staff would monitor him closely, with the possibility of resting him for the upcoming Carabao Cup tie.
Gabriel Magalhaes – Early in the second half, the Brazilian centre‑back slipped while clearing a cross and fell clutching his leg. He received immediate treatment, prompting a brief moment of concern among the staff and supporters. Arteta told the BBC that “we all thought he would have to come off” and described the incident as “really worrying”. Gabriel, however, completed a series of stretches on the touchline, returned to the field and continued without further issue, later scoring the second goal.
Other notes – The match also saw Noni Madueke shift to left‑back after Calafiori’s late introduction, and his performance was described by Merson as “alright”. Arteta hinted that Madueke could gain confidence with more minutes, while also noting the return of Piero Hincapie from injury, who may feature in the Carabao Cup game to build fitness.
With the Carabao Cup fourth‑round tie against Fleetwood Town scheduled for Tuesday’s at Highbury Stadium, Arteta faces decisions on how to balance squad rotation with the need to keep key players fresh for the Premier League clash with Liverpool at Anfield the following weekend.
The return of Hincapie offers an additional option for defensive depth, while Madueke’s recent exposure at left‑back may provide further cover.
Arsenal’s position at the top of the table, now level with Manchester City, underscores the importance of maintaining momentum while managing the injury list. The Gunners will aim to build on the “comfortable” win over Everton, keep the squad healthy, and continue their push for the league title as the season progresses.
