Mat Ryan has completed his first Arsenal training session.
In perhaps a deal that caught many by surprise, the Australia international has joined the Gunners on loan from fellow Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion for the remainder of the season.
The deal was confirmed on Friday morning, and it’s safe to say that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu are pleased with the signing of Ryan.
“We know Mat very well through his performances with Brighton in recent seasons and he brings additional quality to our squad,” Arteta told Arsenal.com. “Mat has very good Premier League experience and has played over 100 times in the league, which is something that will benefit us greatly on and off the pitch.

“We welcome Mat to Arsenal and look forward to working with him this season.”
“Mat is an experienced goalkeeper, a proven talent in the Premier League and has also played many internationals for Australia,” Edu added. “Mat will further strengthen our squad with his experience and knowledge of playing at the highest level.
“Following Matt Macey’s recent move to Hibernian, Mat will provide very good competition and positive support to all our goalkeepers and we are looking forward to him integrating quickly into the set-up here at Arsenal.”
Ryan signed in time to be eligible for Saturday’s FA Cup fourth-round tie against Southampton and it remains to be seen if he’s handed an immediate debut.
With that said, the 28-year-old was thrust directly into training soon after his transfer was confirmed.
As seen in the images below Ryan trained alongside Bernd Leno and Runar Alex Runarsson at London Colney on Friday, spoke with goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana Pavon and pulled off some fine saves for the camera operator.
