Arsenal tracking World Cup winner as Edu eyes transfer to solve problem position

Arsenal may have kept four clean sheets in a row, but they are still on the look out for a goalkeeper this January.

Runar Alex Runarsson was brought into replace Emi Martinez as back up to Bernd Leno after the Argentinian left for Aston Villa in the summer.

But after a series of shaky displays from the Icelandic stopper and the departure of Matt Macey, Mikel Arteta has admitted that the Gunners are considering bringing in another player between the sticks.

“We are assessing what is going to happen with the three positions,” he said.

“The discussions we had in the summer with Edu and the club were a little bit different to what actually happened because of the transfer window and the situation that developed with Emi at the end of the day.

“We didn’t have much time to do what we really wanted to do and we decided to assess the situation now in this window, which is what we are trying to do, and we will make a decision about how we want to move forward in those three positions in the goalkeeping area.”

One of the main issues with Matt Macey’s departure for Arsenal is that it has left them short of homegrown players.

With this in mind Tom Heaton could be the perfect man to bring in on a short term deal. The 34-year-old is an England international with Premier League experience who is out of favour after Martinez’s arrival at Aston Villa.
