Tierney, Martinelli, Mari: Arsenal team news and injury updates ahead of Newcastle clash

Arsenal missed the chance to climb into the top half of the Premier League table yesterday after being held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners would have climbed above London rivals West Ham United had Mikel Arteta’s side won by three or more goals yesterday, but a failure to break down Palace’s very resolute back line saw Arsenal only earn a point on home soil.

There is no time to dwell on last night’s disappointments, with Arsenal returning to Premier League action on Monday night against Newcastle United, the side they knocked out of the FA Cup last week.

Although there was no win for Arsenal yesterday, their injury list is decreasing too, although there are some fresh concerns ahead of the weekend.

Here we take a look at the latest news.

Gabriel Martinelli

Martinelli was forced out of the Arsenal lineup ahead of the FA Cup tie with Newcastle on Saturday with Arteta fearing the worst.

He said: “He was in a lot of pain and we’re going to have to see how he is. He was in pain so I imagine we’re not going to have good news with him.”

However, a scan on Monday revealed that there was no major damage and the Brazilian can be expected to return to action shortly. The Palace game came too soon for the forward, but an appearance against the Magpies on Monday is not out of the question.

The Brazilian was pictured in training with his team-mates on Wednesday so is not far away from a comeback.
