Mikel Arteta and Edu told to change Arsenal’s January transfer mission amid Emi Buendia links

Arsenal have been told to avoid making a single signing in the January transfer window.

Despite the winter window only being open for a couple of days, the Gunners have been active in terms of outgoings with Sead Kolasinac and William Saliba joining Schalke and Nice on loan respectively.

Amid talk of signing an attacking midfielder this month, Liverpool legend John Barnes is of the opinion that Arsenal must focus their attention on offloading players on high wages.

This would include Mesut Ozil, the club’s highest earner on a reported £350,000-a-week and has not been included in this season’s Premier League and Europa League squads.

Meanwhile, the likes of Sokratis and Shkodran Mustafi have also been tipped to move on as they are in the final few months of their contracts at the Emirates Stadium.

“Are Arsenal going to get players better than they already have? I don’t think they will,” Barnes told BonusCodeBets.

“They can go and make signings but they need players who can improve the team to make them better rather than bringing in players in for the sake of it.

“What they need to do is get rid of the players that are on big contracts and then think about how they can improve the squad with the money and salaries they have available after they’ve moved on one or two players on and make a much better effort next year with their good young players.

“To make signings now and spending money on players that may not improve the team seems pointless.

“Arsenal have played well in their recent games and won matches because they have always had the potential to do so.
