Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is lacking a creative central midfielder who can unlock defences, says club legend Ian Wright.
The Gunners were outclassed on their own turf by Aston Villa last night, slumping to a shock 3-0 defeat at the Emirates.
Dean Smith’s men could have ran out even more comfortable winners on another day, with mesmerising performances from Ross Barkley, Jack Grealish and Ollie Watkins ensuring it was a miserable night for the hosts.
Arteta took full responsibility for his side’s alarming performance, admitting they were lacking “spirit” for the first time under his management.

But Arsenal hero Wright believes the Spaniard has a more technical problem on his hands in north London, lamenting their lack of creativity in the middle of the park.
“Mikel is going to want the players he wants to come in to implement what he wants,” he said on BBC’s Match of the Day 2.

“But at the same time, the effort and output from a team that was rested was nowhere near good enough.
“A Villa team that is coming there and you know they’re going to press you, you need to press your game upon them.
“Yes, there is a lacking of a central midfielder who can create and that’s what he needs.

“But at the same time, you can’t go into a game with that type of attitude and expect to win it.”
Villa took the lead after 40 seconds at the Emirates, only for John McGinn’s superb opener to be ruled out when Ross Barkley was deemed to have been interfering with play in an offside position.
