Emiliano Martinez’s four-word Instagram message ahead of emotional Arsenal return

Emiliano Martinez returns to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday in what promises to be an emotional night for the ex-Arsenal goalkeeper.

After a decade in north London which included numerous loan spells, the 28-year-old left the Gunners on a permanent basis as he sealed a £20m transfer to Aston Villa during the summer window.

Martinez impressed in Bernd Leno’s absence towards the end of last season and , reported that the north London outfit wanted to keep him and were prepared to offer him a new contract that would have come with a significant pay rise on his £25,000-a-week salary.

Although, they were always aware that the goalkeeper wanted regular first-team football in order to commit his long-term future to the club.

And when Leno was chosen to start against Fulham on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season, the writing was very much on the wall for Martinez and his move to Villa Park was confirmed a few days later.

Since joining Villa, the Argentine has been an ever-present under head coach Dean Smith in the league and is set to start against the Gunners in the final game before the international break.

It will be the first time Martinez has faced his former club and he’s taken to social media ahead of the game.

Posting a simple four-word message following a good week of training, it would appear that Martinez is feeling sharp as he looks to deny his ex-teammates a fourth straight win across all competitions.

“Solid week of training,” he wrote on Instagram.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been speaking about Martinez ahead of the game and admitted it wasn’t in his plans to sell the keeper.

“He had a career of 10 years here. It wasn’t just the last six or eight months,” Arteta said in his pre-match press conference. “You have to look at everything he did through his time at the club.
