Arsenal will be without four players for today’s Premier League clash with Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium.
Reiss Nelson missed Thursday night’s Europa League win over Molde after picking up knee injury in training ahead of the game. Reports at the time said the issue was only minor and Nelson could be back for the visit of Villa on Sunday afternoon.
However, the club have issued an update on Arsenal.com that confirms Nelson will miss the game today but the young winger is expected to resume full training next week so it’s facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Arsenal didn’t suffer any further injury problems following Thursday night’s win that has seen Arsenal take control of Group B. We are now odds-on to qualify for the knockout stages after winning all three of our group games so far.
However, it’s back to Premier League action today and Arsenal still have three long-term absentees for the Villa game as Calum Chambers, Pablo Mari and Gabriel Martinelli remain unavailable for selection.
Chambers has been back in full training recently after recovering from a serious knee ligament injury but the centre-back still lacks match fitness so won’t be considered for the clash with Aston Villa this evening.
Mari has been out since damaging ankle ligaments against Manchester City back in June and he’s been stepping-up his recovery by doing ball work at London Colney. The club says Mari should be back in full training after the upcoming international break.
Martinelli has also been progressing well in his recovery from a knee ligament injury as he’s been spotted working with the main group this month. However, the Brazilian is still well short of fitness and won’t be back in full training until later this year.
Elsewhere, David Luiz is available again after making a successful return from a thigh injury in midweek so the Arsenal squad is in decent shape ahead of tonight’s huge clash with Aston Villa.
Mikel Arteta desperately needs to go into the international break off the back of another win in the Premier League as we currently sit 10th in the table despite last week’s impressive win over Manchester United.
The Spanish coach is set to recall a number of key players tonight as the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Hector Bellerin, Kieran Tierney, Thomas Partey and Gabriel were rested for the win over Molde.
