Arteta won’t rule out a new contract for Elneny

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is not ruling out the possibility of Mohamed Elneny earning himself a new contract at the Emirates Stadium, but stressed things must progress ‘one step at a time’.

The Egyptian international joined Arsenal in 2016, but was sent on loan to Besiktas in August last year by Arteta’s predecessor, Unai Emery.

He has now returned to the fold and was one of Gunners’ best players during the 1-0 win against Manchester United on Sunday.

Asked about Elneny’s recent performances, Arteta said: “I think he is responding really well to all the challenges we are putting in front of him.

“He had a big one when he came back from his loan spell to show what he could bring to the squad and I think everyone has seen what he can do, so I am really pleased with his performances and what he brings to the team.”

The midfielder’s form has also raised questions about his future, with the former Basel midfielder’s contract due to expire in 2022.
