Mikel Arteta sends message to Reiss Nelson as he drops January transfer window hint

Mikel Arteta – the Arsenal head coach – has set winger Reiss Nelson the challenge of making the most of any opportunities that come his way at the Emirates Stadium over the coming months.

Nelson has found himself on the fringes of the first-team in north London so far this season, racking up just four appearances, all of which have so far come in cup competitions.

With competition for places high, certainly as far as Arteta’s options are concerned for the Premier League, the Spaniard has revealed that Arsenal did have plans during the summer transfer window, which closed earlier this month, to send him out loan in the hope that he would get more valuable first-team minutes under his belt.

However, Nelson, of course, has since stayed at the Emirates Stadium, despite several other attacking stars currently ahead of him in the pecking order.

Nevertheless, Arteta has set the former Hoffenheim loanee the target of pouncing on any opportunities that come his way.

“We ended up with a large squad at the end of the transfer market,” explained Arteta ahead of Thursday night’s Europa League tussle with Dundalk.

“We had a few plans in mind with Reiss, one of them was to send him out on loan to get more minutes because of the competition we have upfront. The reality is that he’s been really good in training, he wants to stay here and fight for his place.
