Arsenal legend Martin Keown says Mesut Ozil’s current situation is “extremely sad”.
Ozil has been left out of the Gunners’ Premier League and Europa League squads and will not be able to play any football for Arsenal in those competitions until at least January when Mikel Arteta can change his selections.
The Germany international is now in the last year of his Gunners contract which earns him around £350,000 per week.
The club’s board are reportedly unhappy with that contract and Ozil’s unwillingness to depart during the summer window, and perhaps as a result, the German remains frozen out having not featured since March.

Arsenal legend Keown discussed the situation on BT Sport ahead of the Gunners’ Europa League opener with Rapid Wien.
He said: “When you don’t get named in the 25, you’re basically being told that you’re not welcome, and you’re not part of the future.
“I think it’s extremely sad, he’s a quality player. For whatever reason, we don’t really know why, but when someone’s technically gifted like that, it has to be an application thing, effort, they’re not happy with the full package and that’s a real shame that it couldn’t be worked out.”
Fellow BT Sport pundit Owen Hargreaves also believes it’s a shame to see Ozil’s current situation at the Emirates Stadium.
“A football player wants to play football – that’s the only reason he signed a contract,” said the former Manchester United midfielder. “He probably had a ton of options, but he wants to play for Arsenal.
