Every word Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta just said on Thomas Partey, Mesut Ozil and Bernd Leno

Did Arsenal get away with that win?

We knew it was going to be a difficult match. We made it harder in the beginning with a few decisions that we made and obviously the goal we conceded, which if anything is obviously my fault because I demand we do those things.

“I really like the reaction. In the second half we understood much better the spaces we have to attack and we played with more purpose. We generated much more and we conceded a late chance with another misunderstanding at the back.

In general we scored two good goals, the second was fantastic. We are delighted to start with a victory.

You’re persisting with playing out even when under pressure?

It’s part of our game model. We need to understand when we can do that and when we should kick the ball into the stands. It is a big part of what we’re trying to do but we recognise from the outside it’s much easier than inside.

Bernd can do that, he has the courage to do it, we’ve been very successful at doing it with the amount of goals we have scored even in important games. We need to find the right balance but I will keep encouraging them to do it in the right moments.

Is the goal Bernd Leno conceded just the risk you have to accept for the rewards that come?

Absolutely but they will understand better and better the type of balls we have to play in those areas and to who in relation to where the pressure is coming and the type of distances that you can manage from the opponent.

After that everything will be better. In a split second you have to make a decision, you have to make the right touch and the right pass. The opponents as well are intuitive and they are waiting for that.

It’s something we have to keep working on because we want to play the way I want to. It’s necessary that I keep using both in our build-up play.

Were you surprised by how quickly Thomas Partey settled…
