Mesut Ozil set for Arsenal exit in January with MLS clubs still keen on deal

Mesut Ozil could leave Arsenal in January after being left out of their Premier League squad.

The 32-year-old is the highest-paid player in club history on £350,000-a-week but has not played since March.

Talks have yet to bear fruit overpaying up his contract and Ozil, who had already been left out of Arsenal’s Europa League squad, will now explore his options.

MLS club DC United remain interested in the German World Cup winner, who has fallen out of favour under Mikel Arteta and is in the final year of his contract.

Greece defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos has also been left out of both squads after failing to seal a move to Napoli during the transfer window.

Arsenal currently have 19 non-homegrown players over the age of 21, two more than the Premier League limit, and that has resulted in the axe for both players.

Meanwhile, Arteta faces a defensive headache for the next six games with Rob Holding potentially set to miss all of them.
