Thomas Partey’s dad has revealed he had to convince his son to join Arsenal – by selling him the idea of getting Mikel Arteta’s side back into the Champions League.
Partey arrived at the Emirates from Atletico Madrid on transfer deadline day after the Gunners made a late decision to trigger the midfielder’s £45million release clause.
The 27-year-old Ghana international was high on Arsenal’s list of targets all summer, and was believed to be keen on switching to the Premier League.
But his dad says the prospect of playing in the Europa League threatened to derail a deal, with Partey also the subject of interest from Chelsea and Juventus, who were able to offer Champions League football this season.
However, Jacob Partey told Ghanaian outlet Joy Sports that he convinced his son to take on the challenge of ending Arsenal’s four-year wait to compete in Europe’s top club competition.

“My advice to him was irrespective of the big move, he has to keep training seriously and not lose focus. Not chase ladies so he doesn’t flop! And he was very receptive of that.”
