Arsenal make William Saliba loan decision after failing to offload in summer window

Arsenal are set to keep William Saliba in their ranks until the January transfer window at least, despite reports linking the defender with a loan move to Brentford.

Saliba, 19, completed a £27million move to the Gunners in 2019 before being sent back on loan to St-Etienne for the duration of last season.

Yet after suffering a number of injuries before the French football season was curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was believed he would be loaned out again by Mikel Arteta and co this term.

St-Etienne were keen to secure another loan deal for the centre-back, only for the move to fall through when paperwork was not completed before international transfer deadline passed on October 5.

However, The Athletic claim Saliba will instead be remaining at Arsenal until January at least.

He is expected to be named in Arteta’s 25-man Premier League, which is due to be announced on October 20.

And Arteta suggested earlier this month that he still requires a transitional year to develop further after making just 15 appearances for St-Etienne last season.

But he is now expected to remain at Arsenal for at least the next two-and-a-half months

“[Saliba] had a year where Arsenal essentially loaned him to Saint-Etienne and that was a transition year for him,” he said after their Carabao Cup fourth round…
