Wenger explains how United hijacked Ronaldo
Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has explained how Manchester United hijacked the Gunners’ chances of signing Cristiano Ronaldo in 2003.
The now five-time Ballon d’Or winner moved to United 17 years ago and the rest is history – and Wenger has revealed that his former side could have signed the Portuguese attacker.
Wenger told The Guardian, per Team Talk: “I would say there is not one player, there are 50 (he regrets not signing)! On the other hand, maybe the closest was Cristiano Ronaldo, when he signed for Man United.
“We had an agreement with Sporting and Man United took Carlos Queiroz as assistant coach. They just outbid us quickly and took Ronaldo. But we had an agreement basically. He had the shirt of Arsenal, I had lunch with him and his mother at the training ground!”
Arsenal keen on Sporting youngster
Arsenal are in a battle with a host of top European clubs for Sporting Lisbon left-back Nuno Mendes, according to Calciomercato.
The Italian outlet reports that the Gunners are in a race with AC Milan, Manchester United and Wolves for the 18-year-old’s signature.
