Thomas Partey has already shown Mikel Arteta that Arsenal do not need Houssem Aouar

The summer transfer window was filled with talk over who Mikel Arteta would bring in to bolster his midfield.

It was the are that the Spaniard was most keen to strengthen, even after completing another season-long loan move for Dani Ceballos.

Thomas Partey was the strong link early on in the window, but as the weeks drew on another name emerged – Houssem Aouar.

Aouar is a different player to Partey, with his focus more on the attacking side of the game, with Partey seen as a more defensive-minded midfield man.

Which way would Arteta look to go?

With Aouar not feasible, Arsenal went back in for Partey on deadline day, and secured his services by paying the £45million release clause Atletico Madrid had set.

That had appeared to be the sticking point throughout the window, but the Gunners finally decided to stump up the money and secure the Ghanaian’s services.

It would appear then, that Arteta has gone for a more defensive midfielder in his strengthening process, but that may not necessarily be the case.

Partey’s international team-mate Andy Yiadom believes Arsenal have got the best of both worlds with Partey.

Speaking to Goal.com he said: “When I’ve watched Atletico, it does seem like he sits there and does the dogged work, but when he is away with us he has a lot more to his game than that.
