Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has labelled Mesut Ozil’s offer to pay club mascot Gunnersaurus’ wages as a ‘very good PR stunt’.
The man who has worn the costume for 27 years, Jerry Quy, was effectively made redundant earlier this week as part of cost-cutting measures to help ease the financial burden of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Outcast Ozil, who hasn’t played a game for the Gunners since March, made the grand gesture of covering the mascot’s wages so he can continue his role.

The German said in a post on social media: ‘I was so sad that Jerry Quy aka our famous & loyal mascot @Gunnersaurus and integral part of our club was being made redundant after 27 years.
‘As such, I’m offering to reimburse @Arsenal with the full salary of our big green guy as long as I will be an Arsenal player.
‘So Jerry can continue his job that he loves so much.’
Arsenal responded to Ozil’s offer by insisting that the much-loved mascot will return when fans are allowed back at matches.
