Edu explains why Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira wanted to leave Arsenal

Arsenal technical director Edu insists neither Matteo Guendouzi or Lucas Torreira were forced out of the club and insists both players prompted their departures by approaching Mikel Arteta and himself.

The midfielders, who were recruited by Arsenal two years ago on the recommendation of former head of recruitment Sven Mislintat, have both fallen out of the first team picture for differing reasons.

Torreira featured prominently during the early weeks of Arteta’s tenure but failed to win his place back after suffering a serious ankle injury in a fifth round FA Cup tie at Portsmouth just prior to lockdown.

Guendouzi initially benefited from the Uruguay international’s absence by taking his place in the side, but he has been exiled ever since his confrontation with Neal Maupay during a defeat against Brighton back in June.

The France international has joined Lorient on loan, while Torreira has been recruited by Atletico Madrid, but Edu insists the door still remains open at Arsenal for both players who required moves to kick-start their…
