Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been given the green light to get physical this season after signing tough guy Thomas Partey.
The Gunners spent big on deadline day to sign the Atletico Madrid enforcer in a stunning £45m swoop.
And technical director Edu, who claims Partey had been a target for seven months, wants to see him help Arsenal shake off their long-held label as southern softies.
Edu, who once brought steel to the Arsenal midfield himself as a player, said: “I think we improved the squad’s quality and physicality.
“I think you get all the players who we really focused on. If you see Willian, he brings us experience and a very special physicality in terms of speed.

“If you see Gabriel, he gives us a lot of physicality and presence. Dani Ceballos, quality. Thomas, physicality, quality and mentally he is very strong.
“In the end if you see all these players we brought to the club, they are very good here (points to legs), but they are better here (points to head) which for me is very important.
“When you talk to the players, they have a lot of ambition, they are excited and they are hungry to win a title again.”
And Gunners technical director Edu believes Partey is one of many “physical” players they have added to their ranks over the summer
Partey’s arrival came as a surprise as Arsenal spent most of the window insisting the 27-year-old midfielder’s release clause was too high – before triggering it on the final day.
And Edu paid tribute to owner Stan Kroenke and the board for stumping up the cash, which also included a £2.5m signing-on fee, 10 per cent agent commission and £260,000-a-week in wages.
