Arsenal dealt huge Aouar setback
Arsenal have been dealt a blow in their bid to sign Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar.
The 22-year-old midfielder has been a long-term target for the Gunners, and it was hoped they could land him before the transfer window closes next week.
The French club have been clear, however, that if no deal has been agreed by the end of Friday, Aouar will remain at the club.
That news appears to have reached French champions Paris Saint-Germain, who have themselves made an 11th-hour bid to sign the midfielder.
According to L’Equipe , PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has opened talks with Lyon counterpart Jean-Michel Aulas with a view to signing Aouar.

This could be a hammer-blow to Arsenal’s plans, with the Gunners seeing their most recent offer for the midfielder rejected as Lyon hold out for £45 million.
There may be some hope for Arsenal, however, with L’Equipe’s report stating that Aouar would prefer a move abroad over a domestic transfer.
Southgate reveals reason behind Saka selection
Gareth Southgate has revealed he did not speak to Bukayo Saka about his decision to represent England over Nigeria.
The Arsenal starlet told Sky Sports in July that he had a difficult decision to make regarding international football, and whether to stick with England after progressing through the youth ranks, or switch to Nigeria.
“It’s a tough choice,” Saka said at the time. “I’m happy to have represented England at youth level, but I’m also proud of my Nigerian heritage from my parents.
“We haven’t been picked by any team so it’s about staying humble and when the time comes we’ll make the decision.”
