After Monday’s encouraging but ultimately fruitless trip to Liverpool Arsenal find themselves back on Merseyside for the fourth round of the EFL Cup.
It may not be Mikel Arteta’s top priority but the Arsenal coach will only be more aware after Monday’s 3-1 defeat at Anfield that he cannot sniff at chances of silverware when his side are so far from competing for the biggest prizes in the game.
“We are going to take the Carabao Cup seriously, that is for sure,” Arteta said before Arsenal’s involvement in the competition began.”
“The last few seasons I think this competition for the clubs has raised [in importance], there is only one winner in the Premier League.
“That leaves a lot of frustrated clubs and now everybody wants a title and you can see in the last few years that teams have used strong line-ups and the types of finals we have seen in recent years.”

Certainly he has offered an early indication that he will take the EFL Cup relatively seriously, naming the likes of Bernd Leno, David Luiz and Nicolas Pepe in the side that beat Leicester City 2-0 last week.

Arsenal’s line-up should look considerably different for their second match at Anfield in three days.
Alex Runarsson could be in line for his debut, whilst it would be surprising if William Saliba doesn’t feature.
