Good evening and welcome to live coverage of Mikel Arteta’s press conference after Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield.
The Gunners earned a surprise lead against the run of play through Alexandre Lacazette who pounced on a mistake by Andy Robertson to finish off what had been a flowing move for the visiting team.
Arsenal’s lead lasted all of 147 seconds before Sadio Mane converted the rebound from Mohamed Salah’s shot. Before the half was out the champions were leading, Robertson making amends for his earlier error by stabbing in at the back post.
The second period brought two fine chances from Lacazette but the striker, in such fine goalscoring form of late, spurned two one-on-ones after much improved build-up play from the Gunners.
Not until the 88th minute were Arsenal killed off by the champions, Diogo Jota striking his first goal for his new club to consign the Gunners to a first defeat of the campaign.
Arteta might reflect on how different the game could have been had Sadio Mane seen red after connecting with Kieran Tierney’s face inside the opening five minutes at Anfield. Referee Craig Pawson instead gave the Liverpool forward a yellow card.
The Arsenal manager could also find himself asked about transfers with Lyon chief executive Jean-Michel Aulas having set a deadline of Friday for the Gunners to agree a deal for Houssem Aouar. Their first bid, worth £32.5million, has been rejected but they are set to return with an improved offer.
