Ian Wright has claimed Donny van de Beek would have been a better signing for Arsenal than Manchester United.
The Dutch midfielder is United’s only summer signing to date, having arrived from Ajax for £34.6million.
Van de Beek’s arrival prompted tactical questions of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as to whether he can play in the same midfield alongside Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba.
Arsenal, meanwhile, are keen to add to their midfield options this summer despite the return of Dani Ceballos.
The club are still pursuing long-time target Thomas Partey, with Atletico Madrid keen to sign Lucas Torreira.
Houssem Aouar is also a target, but it has been reported that the Gunners don’t have the funds to strike a deal with Lyon at the moment.
With that in mind, Wright believes Van de Beek would have been better served coming to the Emirates, where he believes there is a much greater need for a goal-scoring midfielder.
“Donny van de Beek, he’s someone that I wish someone more like Arsenal could have taken,” said the former Gunners striker on The Kelly & Wrighty Show.
“When you look at Pogba, what he’s doing, and you look at Bruno Fernandes – that is Donny van de Beek’s position.
“So people are thinking they’re going to see Van de Beek [sitting] with Pogba and Fernandes, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.
