The Premier League is back and Arsenal got the ball rolling for England’s top-flight on Saturday afternoon, marking the start of Mikel Arteta’s first full season in charge.
Last term ended on a high with victory in the FA Cup and the momentum continued with a triumphant win against Liverpool in the Community Shield.
There’s certainly plenty to improve upon in the Premier League though, following a disappointing eighth-placed finish last year, and today’s game provided a fresh start.
It didn’t take long for Arsenal to get going as Alexandre Lacazette opened the scoring inside 10 minutes and the Gunners reached full flow in the second half.
Willian’s corner provided new defender Gabriel Magalhaes with a debut goal and the former Chelsea man was then provider once again, assisting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for his first goal of the season.
The Gunners’ skipper blasted the ball into the top corner of the net to cap off a fine opening day victory for Arteta’s side, extending his record as the highest scorer in the Premier League since he moved to English football.
Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright is renowned for his support of the side and, ahead of the return of Match of the Day this evening, he shared a clip on social media celebrating the win.
In the video, he declared ‘what a goal’ before glancing the camera towards Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer, his fellow pundit, who looked less than impressed with the noise he was making.
Arsenal’s next challenge is another London derby against West Ham at the Emirates Stadium next week, which is followed by a Carabao Cup clash with Leicester City.
