Arsenal issue injury update on Gabriel Martinelli and Pablo Mari ahead of season opener

Arsenal have revealed that Pablo Mari is fit enough to run outside, as he continues his recovery from injury.

The defender, who signed for the Gunners back in January, made just a couple of appearances before the coronavirus pandemic halted his first months in the Premier League.

And then, just minutes into the top-flight’s return, Mari suffered an ankle injury in the defeat to Manchester City.

That kept him sidelined for the remainder of the season, with him also missing the Community Shield win over Liverpool last month.

However, Arsenal’s official site have now confirmed that his recovery is at the stage where he can run outside and continue his strengthening programme.

He will miss this weekend’s Premier League kick off, with Arsenal travelling across London to face newly-promoted Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Arsenal are hoping he can return to full training by the end of the month in a major boost for boss Mikel Arteta.

David Luiz’s neck injury had put extra strain on Arteta’s defensive resources, despite the £25million arrival of Gabriel Magalhaes from Lille.

Meanwhile, Gunners forward Gabriel Martinelli is set to miss the rest of 2020 after suffering a knee cartilage injury.

On Martinelli, Arsenal revealed he has had a “successful arthroscopic procedure undertaken to repair a lesion in the cartilage of the left knee”.

They also confirmed that he has returned to Brazil to continue his recovery, with the hope of him returning to full training by the end of the calendar year.

Arsenal have also confirmed that Luiz, Emile Smith Rowe and Sokratis will be all unavailable for the trip to Fulham.

Sokratis misses out with a calf injury, while Smith-Rowe is struggling with a shoulder issue.
