Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa: Arsenal ‘close’ to contract, Villa set deadline, £20m demand

Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez’s post-lockdown performances have given Mikel Arteta a major selection headache.

After Bernd Leno’s injury against Brighton & Hove Albion in June, Martinez stepped in as number one and impressed as the Gunners secured both the FA Cup and Community Shield.

That form has led to speculation over his future, with the 27-year-old wanting to establish himself as a number one – be that at Arsenal or elsewhere.

A number of clubs have been linked with a move, Aston Villa the most strongly, and we have all the latest on his future below.

Martinez ‘close’ to new contract

At the back end of last month, reports emerged with Martinez being on the verge of signing a new contract with the club, despite serious interest from other Premier League clubs.

According to The Telegraph, the 27-year-old is close to signing a new deal with the club amid speculation that other Premier League sides want to sign him as their preferred number one.

Martinez has recently made it clear of his ambitions to play first-team football during the upcoming season and started ahead of the fully fit Bernd Leno during the Community Shield win over Liverpool.

While Martinez still has two years remaining on his current deal, it is understood that an extension would prove his commitment to competing with Leno.

Schalke identify Martinez as target

German side Schalke have identified Martinez as a potential summer signing, according to Sky Sports.

Having spent the majority of his Arsenal career as a back-up, making a handful of appearances each campaign, his stock has quickly risen.

Schalke are in the market for a goalkeeper after losing Alexander Nubel to Bayern Munich, though the club are struggling financially to meet Arsenal’s demands for Martinez.
