Willian’s agent Kia Joorabchian details how Arsenal wooed him away from Chelsea

Willian’s agent Kia Joorabchian has revealed why the Brazilian winger opted not to extend his contract with Chelsea and join Arsenal.

Long-term servant Willian ended a seven-year spell at Stamford Bridge this summer – jumping ship to rivals Arsenal after failing to sign a new deal in west London.

It was thought that the player and the club were butting heads over the length of a new contract, something Joorabchian confirmed.

And the super agent admits that it was an easy decision for Willian in the end after seeing Mikel Arteta’s plans for the club.

“With Willian, there’s no secret he wanted a three-year contract, but the Mikel Arteta project was just incredible,” Joorabchian told host Jim White on talkSPORT.

“He was very much wooed by Mikel and [technical director] Edu, and what Mikel presented to him and the way he wants to play football and the way he wants to continue and the success he wants to bring to Arsenal, made the difference.

“That’s what he said and that’s exactly what it was.”

Prior to joining Chelsea in 2013, Willian was on the verge of joining Tottenham, before Chelsea swooped in at the final hour to clinch a deal.

But Joorabchian says it wasn’t just a simple as a call from Jose Mourinho that persuaded him to change his mind, revealing there were financial complications as well.

“That was many years ago,” he explained.

“It was true, wasn’t it?” White asked. “Willian and you were sitting at Tottenham and he was about to sign…”

“And then Jose called,” the agent went on.
