Aston Villa are reportedly interested in Manchester United back up goalkeeper Sergio Romero if they fail to land Arsenal stopper Emiliano Martinez.
Villa boss Dean Smith is looking for a new no. 1 while Tom Heaton continues his recovery from injury.
Veteran Pepe Reina filled in for the England international at the back end of last season, but he has joined Lazio since his loan stint ended.
Villa are weighing up a move for Arsenal’s Emi Martinez, who has stepped up admirably to cover Bernd Leno in recent months, and have lodged an enquiry, according to the Daily Mail.
The Argentine played a vital role in helping the Gunners win the FA Cup and Community Shield, but is facing the prospect of losing his place to the fit-again Leno.
Emiliano Martinez played a big hand in Arsenal’s recent successes
Arsenal clearly still value Martinez’s service though, and have reportedly slapped a £20m price tag on his head.
This has led Villa to look elsewhere, and they have turned their attention to another Premier League no. 2 – Sergio Romero.
Romero has slipped further down the pecking order since the return of Dean Henderson this summer.
And it is understood that he is looking for a way out at Old Trafford to play more first team football.
Man Utd goalkeeper Sergio Romero is a man in demand this summer
However, Villa will face some heavy competition for the Argentina international, with Chelsea and Everton also keen on the 33-year-old.
Romero was used regularly in cup competitions, and played up until the semi-finals of the Europa League, before he was dropped for David de Gea.
United crashed out at that stage to Sevilla, and while admitting it was probably the right call, Owen Hargreaves stated his belief that Romero is the best back up keeper around.
