Martin Keown has urged Arsenal to complete the signing of Gabriel Magalhaes, a player he feels can be ‘the future’ of his new club.
The Gunners appear to have beaten off stiff competition from the likes of Napoli and Manchester United to sign the commanding Brazilian centre-half.
Lille have accepted bids from both Arsenal and their Serie A counterparts but left the final decision up to the player who is reported to have selected the Premier League as his next destination.
Arteta oversaw a significant improvement in Arsenal’s performances and results to the end of last season, culminating in a shock FA Cup final win over Chelsea, having beaten Manchester City in the previous round.
Strengthening his defence, however, remains a priority for Arteta, despite the return of William Saliba from his loan spell at Saint-Etienne and new deals for the likes of Pablo Mari, as well as David Luiz.
Arsenal are hopeful of confirming Gabriel’s arrival early next week with the player due to take a medical imminently and Keown believes his old club have pulled off a genuine coup.
