The 22-year-old is said to have completed his medical after personal terms were met and the Gunners agreed a fee with Lille.
The club are set to announce his move later on this week, and the deal which will cost the club £27m, is set to last five years in a show of faith.
Boss Mikel Arteta had made no secret of his desire to improve his playing squad before his first full season as boss at the Emirates, and Gabriel is set to follow his countryman Willian in making the switch.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano offered the fresh update on Wednesday, and he stated that the contract until 2025 has been signed and agreed with the agents of Gabriel – and that the announcement is currently being planned.
Arteta had said back in June: “We have to put a plan to improve our squad, that’s first, fulfil the ambitions that we have, have the right players to support the talented young players that we have.
“They are still in the very early stages of their development and we have to know that, but we don’t have time.
“The demands of this football club are huge and we cannot stay still. We have to change things, we have to improve them.

Lille president Gerard Lopez explained earlier this month that the defender would be allowed to find a new club this summer, and revealed that he was not short of offers.
