Arsenal injury latest with Pablo Mari only one of four stars to return in September

Arsenal defender Pablo Mari is stepping up his recovery from an ankle injury, but Mikel Arteta will still be without three other injured stars when the new Premier League season gets underway next month.

The Gunners are gearing up for their Community Shield showdown with Liverpool this Saturday, having beaten London rivals Chelsea in the FA Cup final earlier this month.

And in just over two weeks’ time they will kick off the 2020/21 campaign away at Fulham, with a trip to Scott Parker’s newly-promoted side in store on September 12.

However, Arteta will not be able to call upon Shkodran Mustafi, Gabriel Martinelli or Calum Chambers for the foreseeable future.

According to injury analyst Ben Dinnery, Mustafi has successfully complete a small procedure on his hamstring injury and is making good progress.

The German defender is now off crutches with good mobility, but he will not be returning to full training until October.

His absence is unlikely to trouble Arteta too much, nonetheless, with reports suggesting he is up for sale at the Emirates this summer.

Gabriel Martinelli is targeting a return before the end of the year after picking up a knee injury in June

Martinelli is set for an even lengthier spell on the sidelines after picking up a knee injury during a training session back in June.

It is believed the 19-year-old will step up his rehab on return from Brazil in late August in the hope of “working normally” before the end of the year.

As for Chambers, he will continue to work outside in his recovery from a ruptured ACL.
