Arsenal defender Rob Holding is reportedly set to be allowed to leave the club once a deal to sign Lille’s Gabriel Magalhaes is completed.

The 24-year-old was in a rich vein of form before an untimely anterior cruciate ligament injury in December 2018 halted his progress, keeping him out of action for almost 10 months.

Plenty of other centre-backs including David Luiz, Pablo Mari and William Saliba have been brought to the club since Holding’s injury, and he has fallen down the pecking order, making just eight appearances in the Premier League last season.

His game time is likely to be limited even further once the Gunners wrap up a deal for Gabriel Magalhaes, who was in London on Monday for a medical ahead of a £27 million move to the Emirates.

The Daily Mail claim that when the Brazilian eventually joins, Holding will be deemed surplus to requirements and permitted to seek out another club.

Newcastle United are said to be interested in signing the centre-back on loan, but will face competition from newly-promoted Leeds United, who are also keen on the defender.
