Virgil van Dijk’s fitness for Liverpool’s Community Shield clash against Arsenal is in doubt after picking up a nasty cut against RB Salzburg.

Liverpool were in action in the pre-season friendly in Austria when Van Dijk was left bloodied from a collision with an opponent early in the second half.

Van Dijk went down and could be seen nursing a cut above his eye before the decision was taken to withdraw the centre-back.

The substitution is most likely a precaution considering the upcoming game against Arsenal on Saturday, with Nat Phillips replacing the Dutchman.

Van Dijk’s exit wouldn’t have done much to lift Jurgen Klopp’s mood having seen his side go 2-0 down in the first half.

Patson Daka twice fired past Alisson to give his side a healthy lead before a second-half double from Rhian Brewster ensured Liverpool avoided defeat.

The game against Salzburg is the second of Liverpool’s friendlies in a quick pre-season for the Reds.
