Arsenal morning headlines as Gunners eye Joelson Fernandes transfer, Arteta’s transfer plans

Here are your Arsenal morning headlines for Monday, July 20.

Arsenal to sign Sporting starlet – report

The transfer rumours continue to circulate ahead of Mikel Arteta’s first summer transfer window in charge of Arsenal.

A report from A Bola, via goonertalk, suggests that Sporting Lisbon’s Joelson Fernandes could be on his way to the Emirates Stadium. The 17-year-old winger has a £41million release clause, and while he has two years left on his current deal, he has apparently refused to extend it beyond 2022.

In his brief career to date, Fernandes has made three substitute appearances in the Portuguese top flight.

Could cup win persuade Aubameyang to stay?

Arsenal enjoyed one of their best results of the season on Saturday, when they beat Manchester City 2-0 at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang bagged both goals, but has been rumoured to be leaving the club this summer as he only has one year remaining on his contract.

However, Alan Shearer thinks that winning the cup might convince the 31-year-old to remain at Arsenal.

“The key issue right now with Arsenal is what is going to happen with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who scored those two superb breakaway goals against Manchester City at Wembley,” he said.

“Sixty-six goals in 93 starts is quite some record for a team who have not exactly been flying. One of the many impressive things about Aubameyang is he has still got that blistering pace, even at 31.

“I suspect Arsenal winning the Cup could help persuade him to stay.

“It would be a massive blow to the north Londoners if they lose him, not just for his goals but also it will take an absolute fortune to replace him.”
