Manchester United and Arsenal fans have reacted furiously to the news that Manchester City’s two-year Champions League ban has been overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Had the ban been upheld it would have meant the Premier League’s fifth-place team would have qualified for the top tier European tournament next year.
Fifth is exactly where Man Utd presently sit in the table, although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will fancy their chances of overhauling Leicester in fourth.
Arsenal fans, already fuming after their team surrendered a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 to bitter rivals Tottenham on Sunday, have seen their hopes of reaching the Europa League almost certainly dashed by CAS’s decision.
Man Utd will have to finish fourth to qualify for the Champions League now
Supporters of both team took to social media to air their frustrations after the decision was announced on Monday morning.
“FFS MAN WHAT IS THE POINT OF RULES IF U CAN BREAK EM AND GET AWAY WITH IT??” ‘shouted’ one raging Man Utd supporter.
“What was the point in banning them in the first place? Everyone knew they’d just pay their way out before the ban even started,” alleged a second Red Devils fan.
A third ranted: “What a joke… Football is being ruined by these cheaters but still no punishments….Money does have a power.”
Mikel Arteta saw his Arsenal side beaten by north London rivals Tottenham
“FFP – F***ing Failed Project,” tweeted a despondent Arsenal supporter on hearing the news that City would face reduced sanctions for the Financial Fair Play breaches.
“Our decision in the mid 2000s to run a self sustaining model and assume FFP would hold back the billionaire owner clubs has been a disaster,” replied another Gooner.
“I have to wonder what the outcome would’ve been if it wasn’t super rich Man city and was lets say our club arsenal, we’d probably have got it extended to a 4 year…
