Mikel Arteta says Jamie Vardy’s goalscoring heroics this season prove Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang still has years at the top of his game.
Vardy, 33, currently leads the race for the Golden Boot with 21 goals, while Arsenal contract rebel Aubameyang, 31, is second with 19.
The pair go head to head tonight as the Gunners host Vardy’s Leicester with Aubameyang’s future still in doubt.
Because of his age, doubts have been raised about the wisdom of giving the Gabon striker the three-year deal worth £250,000-a-week he wants.
But asked whether Vardy is an example of how strikers can keep on being productive well into their 30s, Arteta said: “Absolutely. I would like to see where Leicester would be today without Vardy in the past three years.
“When I look at the games of Leicester, there is still the energy that he has in every single game. It’s incredible to be consistent in the way that he’s done it in the Premier League. Credit to him, he is doing so well.
Mikel Arteta expects Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to maintain his high standards in the years to come
“So I think it is a really good example to consider and as well both players are always available, they are players so resilient and they are able to play 50-55 games every season and score in a consistent way.
“That is why I don’t doubt about Auba.”
Barcelona, Inter Milan and Real Madrid have all shown an interest in Aubameyang, whose current deal expires this summer.
