Joseph Olowu has completed his loan move to Cork City until the end of June with the young Arsenal centre back saying that he is excited to get his first taste of senior football.
The 21-year-old joins Neale Fenn’s League of Ireland side having made 11 appearances for the Gunners’ Under-23 team in Premier League 2 this season.
He played 45 minutes in a friendly against Longford Town last weekend as a trial after Arsenal decided that the next step for his career was to play competitive senior football.
“It’s a pleasure [to sign]. It was an exciting opportunity when I first heard it, and thought that it’d be good for me to further my footballing career,” Olowu said after completing the short-term move this afternoon.
“Neale explained to me the kind of football he wants to play – he wants to get it on the ground, play exciting football to get the fans on side, so that sounded good to me, to be honest.
“On a personal note, I want to get a lot of game time in and play as much football as possible and on a team basis, I want to help this team get into a good position and keep pushing on for the season.”
Cork, under former Tottenham player Fenn, begin their campaign against old rivals Shelbourne tomorrow night and Olowu is expected to be in the squad for the season opener at Turner’s Cross.
“I always love a game against a big rival,” he added. “I’m looking forward to the challenges, to get the fans onside, and hopefully have a great atmosphere for the opening game of the season.”
