Yet again Arsenal enter a summer transfer window with the state of their on-field leadership in some degree of flux. Fortuitously for them, on this occasion, they have the right man to lead them forward already in place at London Colney.
Unai Emery began the season with five captains. Two of them are already on the way out; Aaron Ramsey bound for Juventus after his contract was allowed to expire and Petr Cech set to return to Chelsea in a non-playing role.
Meanwhile the club are prepared to end Mesut Ozil’s association with Arsenal if they can find another team willing to take on his £350,000-a-week salary. Club captain Laurent Koscielny’s future is also in doubt with no talks yet staged over an extension for a 33-year-old whose ongoing Achilles issues will require careful management if he stays at the Emirates Stadium.
